on tuesday i went to see natalia gutman playing some of the greatest cello sonatas. she is one of the last true russian cello players, pupil of rostropovich she’s known for having one of the heaviest sounds. being 70 years old, i thought she would not play as good as she used to. but nevertheless, she played amazingly, perfect. although her playing never moved me… anyway she’s inspired some of the greatest works for cello from alfred schnittke, he dedicated to her his monstrous first cello sonata and my favorite cello concerto. there’s a priceless document of this russian master in youtube:
two days after we went to the konzerthouse to listen to the 5th shostakovich symphony. that was just astonishing, you get breathless. listening to a shostakovich symphony live is a experience only comparable with… with nothing. you have to try it.
